What the cold chain is
The cold chain is the set of processes and conditions that ensure a temperature-sensitive product remains within a defined thermal range throughout its entire logistics cycle: from production or storage, through transport, to delivery at the point of consumption or use. Any break in that chain, however brief, can compromise the safety or quality of the product.
In the field of courier services and urban distribution, the cold chain applies to pharmaceutical products and vaccines (between 2 °C and 8 °C), fresh and refrigerated foods (between 0 °C and 4 °C), frozen products (below -18 °C), and certain cosmetic or laboratory products with specific temperature requirements.
The stages of urban refrigerated transport
- Loading at origin. The product must be loaded into the refrigerated vehicle from a chamber or temperature-controlled area. Keeping the vehicle's chamber open for a prolonged period during loading is one of the most common critical points.
- Transport. The vehicle must maintain the set temperature throughout the journey, regardless of external conditions. In summer in Madrid, with temperatures exceeding 38 °C, this requires robust and well-maintained refrigeration systems.
- Intermediate stops. On routes with several deliveries, each opening of the chamber represents a thermal risk. Properly designed equipment minimizes heat transfer during stops.
- Delivery. The recipient must be able to verify that the product arrives at the correct temperature. Some operators include temperature data loggers that allow the entire chain to be audited.
What to demand from your refrigerated transport operator
Not all operators that claim to offer refrigerated transport guarantee the same quality. These are the criteria you should assess when choosing:
- Vehicles with calibrated refrigeration systems and documented preventive maintenance.
- Continuous temperature logging during transport, with the option to provide the log to the client.
- Clear action protocols for thermal incidents (what is done if the temperature exceeds the threshold).
- Specific driver training in handling temperature-controlled goods.
- Compliance with ATP regulations (Agreement on the International Carriage of Perishable Foodstuffs) where applicable.
